Le Typiste

A Gentle Way to Learn French

Salut! It's been a while since I've posted. Life's been busy with a new job and adapting to a new country, and on top of all that, I've been focused on learning a new language. As a self-learner of French, I've always struggled to find a simple, relaxed way to practice without the pressure of tests, scores, or strict schedules. I wanted something I could use to simply familiarize myself with the language, not just memorize it.

That's why I created Le Typiste.

The Problem with Most Language Apps

Don't get me wrong—there are some incredible tools out there for learning a new language. But many of them focus heavily on gamification, progress tracking, and constant performance metrics. For me, that often felt more stressful than helpful. I just wanted a space to type, to feel the rhythm of French phrases, and to let the words sink in naturally.

My inspiration came from an unexpected place: the old-school typing software I used as a kid, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. To me, that software was about building muscle memory and making typing second nature. That's the same feeling I wanted to capture for language learning—a tool that wasn't about "doing better" but about "doing more," and letting the repetition do the work. I wanted a tool that encourages practice, not perfection.

I needed an app that was a tool, not a tutor. And so, Le Typiste was born.

How Le Typiste Works

Le Typiste is as simple as it gets. When you open the app, you're presented with a series of French phrases. Your only task is to type them out correctly. There's no timer, no score, and no pressure.

  • Relaxed Repetition: You can type as many phrases as you like, whenever you like. It's perfect for a short break, a commute, or just a few moments of quiet practice.
  • No Judgement: Le Typiste is not a test. It's a tool for gentle exposure. The focus is on muscle memory and building a natural feel for French words and sentence structure.
  • Simple and Accessible: It’s a tool you can add to your existing French learning routine, not a replacement for it. Think of it as a quiet companion for your learning journey.
  • Your Phrases, Your Way: While Le Typiste comes with a set of default phrases, you can also upload your own custom list. This is perfect for practicing phrases from a textbook, a song, or a specific conversation you're trying to master.

Who is Le Typiste For?

Le Typiste is for any French learner who wants a low-pressure, no-stress way to practice. Whether you're just starting out or you’ve been learning for years, it's a great way to:

  • Build typing skills in French.
  • Internalize common phrases and grammar structures.
  • Simply spend more time with the language in a non-demanding environment.

I hope Le Typiste helps you as much as it has helped me. It’s my small contribution to making language learning a little less stressful and a lot more enjoyable.

You can try it out right now on your computer or mobile device. No download required.
